Sometimes kickers go unnoticed within NFL teams. However, many times these are the ones who define the commitments under enormous pressure, and at JefeBet we leave you with a list remembering the best Latino kickers in the history of American football.
Top Latino NFL kickers
Daniel Villanueva
Daniel Villanueva was one of the first kickers and punters of Mexican descent to see action in the NFL. His first five seasons were with the Rams, a team with which he twice led the league in yards cleared and set an organization record for field goal distance by converting a 51-yarder.
He would later be traded to Dallas, where he played his last three seasons and where he set several important records for the organization, such as the most extra points made without a miss with 100, and the most extra points made in a season without a miss with 56. Another interesting fact is that years after retiring, he co-founded the Univision network.
Efrén Herrera
Efrén Herrera was born in Guadalajara and played eight seasons as a kicker in the NFL. In 1974, he was taken by the Detroit Lions in the seventh round of the draft and then traded to the Cowboys. With that organization he played three seasons in which he finished once as the league’s leader in field goal percentage, on another occasion he was co-leader in extra points made and won a Super Bowl. He would go on to play with Seattle and Buffalo, and finished his career with a Pro-Bowl and All-Pro team.
Martín Gramática
After his debut in 1999 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Martin Gramática became the second Argentine to see action in the NFL. In the 2000 season he was named to the Pro-Bowl and in 2002 he not only finished first in most field goals made with 32, but helped his team win the Super Bowl by scoring 12 points in the final. Gramática also played for the Colts (where he won another Super Bowl despite being injured), Cowboys and Saints.
Cairo Santos
Cairo Santos is the only Brazilian to have seen action in the NFL and at 30 years of age is still active in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. In the 2015 campaign, he had his best performance with the Kansas City Chiefs, when he ended up making 39 of 41 field goals to rank among the league leaders. The Sao Paulo native averages a lifetime field goal percentage of 96.6%.
Fuad Reveiz
In the 1985 season, Fuad Reveiz became the second and last Colombian to see action in the NFL and played until 1995, becoming one of the best Latino kickers in the circuit. His best season came in 1994, a year before his retirement, when in a Minnesota Vikings uniform he finished as the leader in field goals made in the circuit with 34, a performance that earned him his only call to the Pro-Bowl and a selection to the All-Pro second team.
Rafael Septien
Although Rafael Septien made his debut in 1977 with the Rams, the Mexican began to live his best moments in the NFL a year later, when he moved to the Cowboys. With that organization he twice led the league in extra points made and in 1981 he achieved his best performance by finishing first in field goals made, with 27, and was named to the Pro-Bowl and selected to the All-Pro team.
